Butch Barbour passed peacefully August 5, 2018 to his heavenly home from the Veterans Home in Ardmore where he received excellent care from a wonderful loving staff.
Don Wayne Barbour was born May 30, 1940 in Healdton, Oklahoma to Fred Warren Barbour and Edythe S. Helm Barbour. He joined sister Monta Lou and brother Kenneth. At an early age, Kenneth named him Butch, and he has been known by that name all his life.
Butch graduated in 1958 from Dundee High School where he enjoyed and excelled at basketball.
Coming from a family of musicians, his Dad taught him the key of D at age seven. Butch enjoyed and developed on his own with his ear for music the ability to be quite a good guitarist and singer. He also enjoyed playing piano. He knew and played many songs including rock-n-roll, country, blue grass, and hymns.
In 1959, Butch joined the Oklahoma National Guard and completed basic training. In April 1961, Butch joined the Army and was a parachutist in the 82nd Airborne at Ft Bragg, North Carolina. In May 1962, Butch was assigned to Germany where he completed his three-year commitment. Following a two-week boat ride return to New York and a flight to Love Field, he arrived in Healdton and married Karen. The highlight of their lives was being parents to sons, Steve and Paul.
Butch worked 31 years for Texaco in Andrews, Texas and Healdton, Oklahoma. Following retirement at the end of 1998, Butch enjoyed working for a time with Chance at Spivey Funeral Home. He worked various oilfield related jobs for the next several years while keeping his yard and acreage nice.
Butch was a devoted family man and a loyal friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by his wife Karen, sons Steve and Sherra, Paul and Lidia, grandchildren Mercedes, Brooke, and Landon Barbour, Shelby and Jacob Palmer, Stuart and Tesha Hofmann, Scott and Erin Hofmann, great grandchildren Addi, Halle, Maggie, and Jordan Hofmann, brother Kenneth and Linda Barbour, sisters-in-love Donna McNeill, Nancy and David Bingman, Margaret and Robert Casey, nieces and nephews.
Pall bearers are Landon Barbour, Zach Wilson, Stuart Hofmann, Jacob Palmer, Mitchell Barbour, Vince Freeman, Larry Bruner, and Larry Munholland. Honorary Pall Bearers are Chance Linville and Rusty Turnbull.
Services for Butch will be Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at First Christian Church in Healdton at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Mount Olive Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Laurel Funeral Home in Healdton.
